Research area
The goal of my research is to better understand the drivers of both societal vulnerability and resilience to climate impacts and natural hazards. I also seek to identify effective interventions and policies for climate adaptation and disaster-risk reduction. Socio-economic inequality is a major focus, as both climate impacts and resources for adaptation are distributed unequally in society. I use both quantitative and qualitative social science methods to gain insights into these themes, often collaborating with earth and environmental scientists to gain a holistic understanding of the hazards and potential for adapatation that arise at the intersection of natural and social systems. My research on these themes include post-tsunami recovery in Aceh, Indonesia; impacts and adaptation to sea-level rise in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines; post-earthquake recovery in Nepal, and adaptation to urban heat in Lisbon and Islamabad, in all cases in collaboration with local researchers.
